I see, so they are after something less creative and more easily marketable. I suppose that makes sense, I was unaware that the winner got put on a cover of a magazine, and that criteria seemed a little odd to me not knowing that.

I am conflicted about the criteria as well but it is what it is. CPU Magazine supports the modding community like no other publication so they have my dedication and appreciation to infinity and beyond.

It may play out that way depending on submissions but they are definitely not looking for "less creative". To say that is doing a disservice to all the modders who have built fantastically creative machines that also happen to be recognizable as a computer.

personaly, I dont build to wow the judges, I build to wow the people. Judging is just the opinion of a group of people and we have all seen what happens in prizefights. So I will do my best to do my duty to the modders of america and as long as I see some smiles from my build, I did my job.
I do this FOR FUN, (in a al picino accent)

Agreed... The number of people that have come over and said that they loved the case and brought their kids over to see it is definitely worth coming up just shy of a cover...

Contest Rules:
1. Only one entrant per person (not per seat).
2. Your mod must be easily recognizable as a computer.
3. A case you have done the work on cannot be entered as someone else's.
4. A single person must be able to lift the case and carry it to the finalist area.
Judging Criteria: Judges' decisions are final and will be based on their observations regarding the following criteria. Each of the following categories is worth 25%
* Technical merit: Creative placement of parts and "outside-the-box" changes you have made to existing components or your case that are likely to have a positive effect on performance and/or that make for more efficient use of the space you have to work with.
* Artistic merit: Does the case have a cohesive theme or a distinctive look, or is it simply a collection of parts thrown together behind a window and lighted fans?
* Polish: The fit-and-finish portion of your work. This includes clean, smooth paint; solid cable management and sleeving/hiding; tight, smooth seams; the functionality of your mods (i.e. custom doors and mechanisms); and effective use of lighting.
* "Wow" factor: Judges' overall reaction to your mod. |
I sure am glad I reread these rules. My roomate and I are in the in the early planing stages of my mod idea and I might not have qualified via 1 and 4. Well at least we are still mostly on the drawing board Hope to have it done by the summer LAN.

Lots of other people have done the same thing so you need to set yourself apart which you could easliy do. maybe have a two layer system with the outer one having real water and fish and the inner one the mineral oil immersed pc (basically a mineral oil pc set in a real fish tank - the inner tank walls would vanish once the outer tank is filled).

Thanks Darth, I love your stuff,,,, you can bet your life savers that the next one will be stepped up biG time. I will be doing fish, but im not going to stop their. I mostly just wanted to show proof of concept with that, I was able to build that for 165 dollars and bought all my parts at Petco... You ever need a helper let me know, I would love to start modding seriously... I think @ PDXLAN 16 I will introduce and new cooling system that will be able to be mass produced for cheap, its a concept I have come up with along with some live fish JUST FOR YOU DARTH... plus I have some extra goodies to put in thanks guys I love the feedback..

Bummy, I really love that setup!! I'd totally buy one... or build one myself
If you add fish, are you going to be able to add filtration and aeration to the tank? How about being able to do water changes? You have your heat already going, but controlling it may be a concern. Just a few ideas I thought of if you were to add fish.
Good luck in your next mod and can't wait to see how this one progresses!
PS- Woot for Petco! LOL, if you have any questions about fish lemme know. If I can't answer it, I have a whole crew with experience that would be glad to help

I have a fish question, If I make a completley enclosed fishtank. (totaly sealed on all sides) and I provide oxyen through a air hose, is that enough Air for the fish to live.

They would die from you not cleaning it... They also might overheat...

depending on the fish they may be fine with the warmth (around 90-100) esp tropical fishies.. they dont need a heater like mine did when i was a kid..

Those are 2 factors I will look at, I need to find out if they can breathe or their is no point looking into the other things, cleaning and heat are important but the air issue needs resoved first.....cleaning and heat can be easily remedied..
