Very cool. I think it was quite appropriate given we also had the lego construction contest

Started working on some updates to the original build, most noticeably... MOTORS! After hearing a lot of comments on how cool it would be to have it motorized, I dug through my bins and came up with 3 lego motors from old robotics sets. Attached and working, the next step will be building and programming an Arduino board so that I will be able to run the crane from a desktop app.

Since you're into Lego, Nitemayr I thought I'd point you to Minecraft. Your mod reminded me that I should share it with the PDXLAN community:
http://www.pdxlan.net/forums/v.....p?p=117483
It might fill the gap until Lego Universe goes live.

Thanks! I've dumped far too many hours into that game at this point. I just hope they get the multiplayer survival working as well as the SP mode...

| The Final Countdown |
|
Part of my New Year's resolution was to actually finish projects that I've started. Thus I come back to this case, which I've never really felt was finished. Over the next couple months I'm hoping to get most, if not all, of the remaining to-do items finished for it!
Here's a breakdown of what's left:
Re-wire LEDs (properly this time...)
Add pulsing LED to the top of the crane tower
Add new side panels with an etched design
Add powerplates (2x2 lego plates wired for power) to the rear of the case
Add Arduino Uno microcontroller to case to control the motors on the crane
Program Arduino to allow interactive crane control |
Optional (but desirable):
Upgrade hardware (it's a bit dated)
New GPU (currently 8800GTS that is slowly dying)
New Motherboard (will be looking at the ASUS Rampage III Extreme Black Edition with some custom annodization work turning the red bits to yellow to go with the theme)
New processor (new mobo requires it...) |
Once I get all that in, I think I will finally feel that this case is "done". Yay.
I finally ordered my Arduino and motorshield, the motorshield requires all the components to be soldered together:
Should be a fun project (note... I've never done anything like this before, I'm not a programmer, I don't have electronics experience....)
This is the Arduino and various components it came with to aid in learning how to work it:
And here is my 20-month old daughter "helping"...
I'll try and keep this post updated as I finish this project out, and should have it at PDXLan this summer. For all of you who continue to stop by and appreciate it: Thank you! It really makes my day!
Stay Tuned!

Managed to get some time to work on it tonight. Soldered the motor shield together and did some basic hookups for the motors. Found out that the 5v provided by the USB connection alone was not enough to run the motors, so I had to hook up to the 12v on the power supply. Yay.
Finally... some video of the crane actually functioning! Needs fine tuning and I have to learn how to interactively control the thing, but progress is progress!!!

That's awesome! It would be really sweet if you could bind some of the crane function to a joystick. So then if you were to enter another case mod contest, you could show them how the crane works using the joystick. But even if you can't, the fact that it moves makes it 100x cooler now.

At the moment, I wrote a simple windows app that has a few buttons to control the crane from the PC, so.. technically I met my goal there. I still want to make the UI worth looking at though.
There is a library for the Arduino that can accept a PS2 controller as input, so I could (in theory) wire one of those in and control it from that too.
I ended up having to re-do some of my gearing on the crane last night, had a pair of gears that were rubbing funny and being noisy. And then I spent about an hour or two figuring out how to get the cables running to the 2 motors on the upper part of the crane to stretch and wrap without getting pulled into the gears for the lower motor. I didn't think that would be one of the more difficult parts to all this...
I think I'm just about ready to reattach the crane to the PC and start figuring out how I want to house/run all the electronics for that. Could be interesting.
I've also started work on the design for etching on the side panels. Have some good ideas, just need to see if they'll execute okay.

Very nice man!
Also: For your side panel - couldn't you use a cnc mill to put lego dots on the panel? Then you could build on the case it self?
