The killawatts are a little strange on certain power supplies sometimes they don't do well with active PFC.

PSU seating req. Reply with quote
Hello, I spoke with Jaden on Saturday about the November PDXLAN event, and he told me about the PSU restriction. He suggested I ask if my rig would pass the wattage requirement by asking for advice here at the forums. After reading this is a question beat to death here, I'm trying to research my own answers. I'm running (2) HD5970's with a 1000w PSU. A single 5970 needs a minimum of 650w as per the manufacture specs, yet this is really low because I tried doing so with a 650w Corsair PSU, and I had several lock ups with the included BSOD's. I replaced the 650w with a SS M-12 700w, and this took care of the problem ( a single 5970). I don't have a meter to test my usage, yet the M-12 cooling fan runs at high speed with a single 5790 (Crysis, BF2/3). I feel that for sure the 5970 X 2 in CFX would require me to purchase (2) tickets, without even having to ask here at the forums. I'm 80% sure the single 5970 would exceed the PSU requirement for a single seat as well.

I think I will just use a a single 5970 and see what happens. I do have access to (2) 4850's I could use in CFX, which I would bring with me if the 5970 did draw to much power, although I'm not sure what the wattage draw would be for the 4850's. I suppose I need to lay my hands on a wattage use meter to answer my questions for sure. I have used a single 4850 for gaming, and it will work, just not at the frame rate I am spoiled with my 5970's. Thank you for the post. I have never been to a LAN event, and I would like to give one a tryout.

I have a kill o watt meter we could plug in if your local let me know and we can checkout where you stand

Holy mother of god why is this horse still being beaten? It's dead!

Halaboutit, if you can't run your system with a 650watt PSU and a single video card, I can promise you that dual cards on a 1kwatt is NOT going to be kosher. A lot of PSUs will suck a lot of juice when they first power on, so sending a 700-800watt dip in power will *probably* trip a breaker if every other rig on your circuit is running. I hate to say it, but even trying to run a 1000 watt PSU at all on a single ticket is a bit reckless.

I distinctly remember some Power Supply Popcorn at a previous LAN, and I believe the cause was too much power being causing a power strip (yes, a strip, not a surge protector) to fail and short out multiple computers on the row.

We'd love to have you join us, though! If you can swap in a 600-700ish watt PSU and a single GPU you ought to be just fine!

... so what you are saying is... Since I plan on bringing a machine with two 580's, a 465 for physics, and a 1050w power supply, that I should swap them out? I just want to make sure I'm following you.

Do you have a back up generator for that? Lmfao

That's an impressive machine man

Think of us like AT&T - - for the Top 10% of power users, we charge more by asking that you get a second seat.

Step 1. Go buy a killawatt or similar device to see what wattage you are drawing.

Step 2. Plug it in and run a benchmark program that stresses your machine.

Step 3. If you draw over 600 watts go to step 4 if you are under 600 watts go to step 5

Step 4. Go buy 2 PDXLAN tickets because you are going to need them. ( plus you get more raffle tickets)

Step 5. If you are under 600 watts go buy 1 PDXLAN ticket.

Problem solved. Have a nice day! Smile

you guys have been more than fair. people will biatch about anything . . .of course I am included. we should instead just give thanks. A dude with an MBA and tons of industry marketing experience could be doing something less stressful making more money than running a LAN party.

Yeah, especially since I just saw the bulldozers and backhoes tearing into our lan building. Looked weird with a big section of roof gone. Are they going to be done by November?

I think old/outdated systems like that should be OK, what do you guys think?

I think those are the cards that require the 10000W PSU right?

When that happens, we will release the "Uber 1337 seat"
