I'm still waiting for a new MMO to come out and come close to the way SWG was at it's prime with living and breathing player-made cities and amazingly customization for housing. Housing, many argue, has nothing to do with gameplay and it's completely pointless. But I honestly had such a blast having an almost Sims-like element to the game that allowed me to basically show off to anyone driving by. |

So somewhat back on topic, I've got to ask:
"Does Star Wars: The Old Republic meet all of your expectations, and do you see yourself playing this game for months to years?"
Also, what do you wish was in the game that isn't?

So many MMOs (all of them?) are focused on crafting, fighting, and quests without having anything to do when none of that other stuff is going on. Once you're max level, if there isn't a raid going on there's not much to do other than craft or PVP. It'd be nice to have something more interesting that didn't rely on you being on your toes (pvp) or grinding mats (crafting). |
What would be my ideal MMO? (Eve Online + SWtOR + Tabula Rasa + Battletech 3025) x New Theme.
Eve Online: Space combat, a single universe, the ability to control entire sections of the galaxy, trade and mining.
SWtOR: Voice acting, engaging story line.
Tabula Rasa: The mythos was mysterious and unknown.
Battletech 3025: A shifting line in the sand, planet control, mechs.
I envision a character who could run missions at the character level and\or the mech level, which would help his "team" to control the planet. Points would given for questing or PvP, with the control of the planet shifting based on those points.
The questing though, can't be a "filler", it has to have an engaging story line. This way, those who want to play at the character level don't feel "left out" of the big picture.
When planet control was established, that would affect the galaxy map, affecting prices in the trade market as well as lanes of travel and ultimately space combat. Without control of the space surrounding a planet, a "team" could not invade.
Now, add in 3 to 5 teams. The lines in the sand (space/galaxy) now become even more complicated, requiring the use of a leadership ladder. There would be a ranking structure based on personal points. The only way to get points is to quest at the individual level, or PvP at the individual level. The person with the most points (computed daily at midnight) is now the general of the "team". Their role now changes to that of space/planetary control. They are the ones that pick where the troops will be sent, which planets to attack, etc... During this time, they cannot do anything else, except for troop movement, and when they are done with their 24 hour shift, their points are reset to 0, the next highest ranking person moves up the chain of command. Actually I have a whole pyramid ranking system and a fun way to balance this, but it's very wordy.
I would introduce some cool stuff, like ship and mech permanent dmg. You decide to buy a mech, go into battle and lose? Well you might have to quest and pvp for a while to rebuild enough money in order to fix your mech. You win? points and cash looted from the corpses of the fallen.
I got lots more ideas, but I'm starting to tangent

Was that so hard to understand? It was nice having something to do besides grind quests and wait for a raid event. Plus, I had a great time turning my house into a swanky shag pad for the eLadies.
Rather then sit and stare at trade chat or guild chat, I worked on the guild city or my house.

(Lots of stuff, but this thread is already so long I'm not going to repost it all
I can't help but notice the only thing you took from SWTOR is the voice acting and storyline. Granted, that's a HUGE chunk of importance, but I take it (maybe incorrectly) as a nod towards the main thing that bugged me: The fact that the actual game doesn't really bring anything to the table other than a Star Wars story and theme.
It's clear that they put a lot of work into the voice acting, scripted events, and how the story is told. The voice acting was very natural, almost to the point of being weird... the standard for voice acting in a game is not very high and SWTOR was so far above it that it was very noticeable at first... compared to WoW's "I NEED MORE MANA" and "I CAN'T DO THAT YET" lol.
But the rest of the game just doesn't have a lot of originality to it, and since I played SWG I guess it has even less since I've already played the theme.
What I'd love to see in a future MMO is something with PVP Battlegrounds like WoW has, but more of what it was when they first came out. Alterac Valley could take a couple hours at times, and a lot of strategy and coordination. I think it'd be really cool to have events where the teams take turns defending (theres one like that now, can't remember the name).
I'm also getting flat-out worn out with the fantasy stuff. I would love a game to come along with a gritty storyline that sets the player in a more modern warzone like Anarchy Online tried to do. Planetside was another really cool idea that just had poor execution. It'd be great to see another MMOFPS - I think the technology has moved forward enough to correct some of the troubles planetside had.
Maybe something like Diablo Online - but more adult themed than WoW is. Blood and gore - not because it's cool, but because it's realistic.... truly gross and frightening monsters... maybe longer-fights that feel more epic - so rather than killing 10 creatures, you kill 5 or 6 but the reward and time invested is the same (that make sense?) I often forget to look at my health bars in these games because you pretty much just cleave your way through creatures that are the same level.
OH and also, way less hand-holding. In EQ1, you learned pretty quickly that you do NOT want to push 'A' by accident when talking to a quest mob or guard. You didn't want to lose faction because if you did you would be Kill-on-site to guards. Having those kinds of risks made the game feel more dangerous and interesting.
EDIT: Oh, and one other thing that would be cool is have customizable guild halls... maybe not actual built structures like SWG had, but totally customizable inside... maybe have rooms that could be rented by guild members (like the housing one could rent in EQ2)- proceeds going into the guild bank - and those rooms could be set up however they want by the player and maybe have additional storage, maybe places you could display items (like you could in SWG).
That was my tangent

This is pretty much the thing I want from every mmo but almost none of them deliver (I never played SWG). LOTRO does to a degree, but a lot of the fun people have outside of the normal three (pvp, raid, crafting) end game things with that game is RP related and I don't really do the RP thing.

Playing on the server Black Valkars or something rather, let me know if anyone else is on the same server. Playing Sith Empire faction as well |
Hey Kayflex, I'm on Black Valkars as well, toon name is Baffos. Send me an invite. I don't know if this post was during the beta. Vallis and my wife are also on this server as Empire. We have republic toons on Empress Teta with other friends.
On the subject of the game:
I just picked up the game recently and really do enjoy how engaged you are in the story and how your choices affect your companion. With other MMOs I found myself skipping the quest text and looking for objectives, their choice of mission conversation allows you to get what information you care about out of the NPCs.
I have not yet been stuck in the game and it has not yet crashed on me. I know it's really using my GPU but I also have everything maxed with 1050x1680.
On the subject of crafting, yes you can't craft if your companions are out on missions. On the flip side, YOU DON'T HAVE TO CRAFT. I don't know how much time I would spend in other MMO's crafting verses telling someone else to go off and do it for me from where ever I am in the game progression.

I shudder to think of the amount of real time I wasted crafting backpacks in EQII...

I would love to take one of those, but I was already in the beta so I don't need to test it out.... I just need it......

| What are you going to do when the story is over? Think critically on this part... |
http://www.mmo-champion.com/th.....p=16735141
How's the game coming along I hear you lost 400,000 subscribers in one quarter?! #1 reason: Lack of content. Oh don't worry they are working on more WoW clone content so you can grind on the hamster wheel with the rest of the sheep when it comes out for a month again.
Hahahahahaha I told ya so. I love being right. Everyone I know quit this game for the exact reasons I told most of you BEFORE it released. It has no END game and the PVP sucks. Just like every other MMO that comes out these days.

So, after making 16 posts, all of which resemble this one in candor and tone I would think it's time for you to chill out.
I don't know if you recall what WoW (or any other popular MMO) was like on launch, but I do. They were all terrible and lacked endgame/pvp. No one is interested in your self-ingratiating tirades. Everyone is fully aware that "WoW is better".
These people are excited about this game and don't need to defend their interests against you. Where you choose to spend your dollar is your business, not ours, and we won't cram our rhetoric down your throat.

As Dayo (A moderator) mentioned - please take the banter somewhere else. I love that you are passionate about "something" but this is not the place.
The topic is the joy and play of the game, let's stay on topic.
