Official Contest: Highland games (Saturday) Reply with quote
Hello all!

Geek Highland games is now being planned.

We've departed from the idea that we must model all of the Highland games we do after actual highland events. It became a little awkward talking about duct taping monster cans together, and trying to "force" it to be something.

Instead - we are now moving forward with the idea that the Highland games should be a multi-hour event on Saturday with a BBQ and Beer Garden in the background. The idea being that while you eat a burger or drink a beer - heck smoke a cigar - while you watch geeks compete.

We really want to keep table wars alive. This is paramount to making new friends, and fostering community spirit. In that fashion The Geek Highland games WILL BE a table war event.

We made 2 mistakes with last Table Wars: Amazing Race in that:
1) We did not give prizes to teams along the way which made a LONG raffle for everyone.
2) Only 2 people from each table could compete - which was a downer to the other 22 people at that table.

This event "The Geek Highland Games" will be a multi-round event but different people from your table can compete along the way. Some events will need 5 people. Some may only need 2-3 and some may be a 1 person event. ANYONE from your table can participate - that's up to your table to decide.

For instance.... we are doing the first round as Tug-o-war. You will need 5 people from your table. We plan to give each table a LIST of the contests PRIOR so you can plan ahead who will be your "delegates" for each contest.

Points for each contest will be awarded and accumulated through the 5-6 hour event. As we progress, every few rounds, teams that are abysmally low will be eliminated making this a survival of the ?fittest? (LOL)

Anyway - prizing will be as follows:

1. Each round will have prizes for the winning participants.
2. The winning table will have a private raffle on Monday.
3. 1 Person from the winning team will win the opportunity to go to the prize room and pick any ONE item that would have gone to the main raffle for themselves. Holy crap.

What do you think? Do you have ideas for rounds? We are contemplating repeating things we have done outside that have been your favorites. HD Shuffleboard? Mouse Toss? PS Toss? DodgeBall?

We will post more as we know it, but for now prepare to have a great time!

/end brain dump. <<Error 21298: Brain Shutting down>>

We could throw HDD magnets into the parking lot with the goal of finding which car it stuck too?

I know I am not part of this event but I want to point out as one of the guys who has been to non-Vector run LANS across the country - this is one of the HUGE ways PDXLAN is not just another LAN . . .the more local LANS tend to springboard off of PDXLAN so you guys might not appreciate what I am talking about as much but if you attend a place like QuakeCon it will become very evident . . .PDXLAN has so much added value it is redonculous.

I heard tell that there was an unopened copy of DOS 5.0 at the last LAN. I'm keeping my hopes up that that will be there if I win.

There was an copy, if I recall we gave it out during the dunk contest at the monster tub.. Also was a copy for 3.11 for workgroups.. FOR WORKGROUPS Shocked

As far as contest, imthinking and I agree there should be a case toss.. similar to the log toss they have in real highland games.. PSU's are too light, and a case toss would be more entertaining..

We should do something with all of the tons of sponsor shirts we all have over the years. Like a Sponsor Shirt relay. Teams of maybe 5 line up, first teammate runs across the field and has to put on 5 sponsor tees. He then runs back and takes them off, the next team mate has to put them all on and then run out and back, rincse repeat. First team to cycle all the way through the shirts wins.

That or if we could get people to bring a ton of shirts we could have a timed event to see how many tees we can get on a team member.

Watermelon seed spitting contest? Bunch of cut up melons, and a metal tub. Shoot for distance, shoot for accuracy.

This sounds like a lot of fun. I like that we aren't limiting the event to two people from the table this time.

Uhhhh no. The words "take off shirt" and the words "lan attendee" should never be in the same sentence. Ever.

Especially for the vehicle owners in the parking lot. Remember the mouse toss not that many PDXLANs ago? (or at least the beginning of it....) Shocked
