| Best Smart Phone?? |
|
With all the phones being crammed into the market I have lost all sense of what is a good one.
I'm still using a Blackberry... lol... I know.
I want one that works good as a "phone". But I need to be able to do all the cool stuff too.
I am with Verizon.
I'm sure there will be tons of differences of opinion so this should be interesting. I just want one that is reliable. It doesn't need to stream movies or stuff like that.

I'm also waiting to see what the new iPhone has to offer as well as the windows 8 phone.
I talked to a Microsoft rep this week.. He's unsure of when the windows 8 phone will be released but more then likely next year he said
Ya I know all the apple haters out there but for a good smart phone that's reliable you can't beat the iPhone. Droids are cool if you want to root them and all
Just my 2 cents bob.. I have owned all of the iPhones and they have improved dramatically over the years but still no flash support:(

Not hating the iPhone at all just giving Bob a hard time =) I'm on tmobile and they don't offer iPhone's and I am not going to drop 600 dollars for a phone to put it on tmobile.
Honestly Bob, Get the iPhone. Easiest to use and understand: android can be a bit much for people if they have no experience with the android OS.

Thx guys -
so are the iPhone's just like other cell phones where you can get a used one and have your number assigned or should I not screw with that and only get new?

If you can swing it I would buy new.. I have bought used ones also but there's nothing like a new phone in my opinion.
Plus used iPhones are expensive

I guess I'll have to head over to the ol' Verizon store and see what deals they have. It seems they always have their own opinion and want to sell you what "they use".

I have the Galaxy SII on Sprint. I absolutely love this phone. Super fast Tegra 2, amazing screen (big/bright), very responsive, and great at multitasking. I would deff look into it if you are able to. I only have one bad thing to say, and that is battery life. I have a charger at work to help, and can usually (95% of the time) get full day before hitting 30%. But occasionally I need to charge it mid day.
GS2 also has a Gorilla Glass screen, which means extra protection from drops and scrapes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elKxgsrJFhw
I love Sprint too. I think their everything plan is what helps make this phone great. I have a plan that is $80/ month and is unlimited everything, which is very nice. Sprint gave me $50.00 back when i first bought it, so the phone cost $150.00 new. Also because I switch to them and got a smart phone (switched from AT&T and got GS2 same day) they credited my account $150.00. So I essentially paid $10.00 for the first 2 months of unlimited service.
I would really look into this phone if I were you. The GS3 should be coming out, if not out already. Sorry i dont follow the new phone thing

Most Android fans probably will vehemently disagree with me on this, but I've never seen an Android phone get good battery life.
Ever.
Garrett's complaint about the battery is the complaint that I hear time and time again when one of my users buys a new android or comes in with problems on an existing one. "This isn't getting good battery life, can you take a look at it and tell me whats wrong?"
"Yeah, it's an Android. If you want great battery life, go Blackberry. If you want good battery life on a smartphone, go iPhone."

I have a Droid 3, and before that I had a Droid 1.
I agree that battery life is terrible without buying an extended battery or having a car / desk charger at work.
It is caused by applications always trying to run even if you aren't using them "just in case" you want to use them, and the screen is what kills the battery most of all on my phone.
Run down of my phone's battery use of the last 4 hours
34% Display
20% Wi-Fi
15% Android OS
12% Opera Mobile
7% Phone Idle
7% Cell Standby
6% Handcent SMS

Well it depends what your looking for out of the phone, and how you use your phone.
I have a motorola Atrix 2. It is not the newest or best phone, but it is still pretty good.
I get 2 day battery life the way I use my phone, and then some. I am pretty confident it is still the best battery life of any android phone using the stock battery.
Grain of salt: I use less then 300min/500mb of data a month.
Iphone will have a better battery. But they are terribly locked down, even when jailbroken. If you want a bigger screen your out of luck. Otherwise they have a very refined user experience, and a stringent app vetting process and a pretty unified platform. (one iphone works with another etc)

My iPhone 4S has a TERRIBLE battery life. Aside from that I love it. The apps, the interface, etc. I recommend them to anyone.
The camera is nice, too.

The problem with the 4S is leaving all of the location features on. There are a few that most people can live without that will save you quite a lot of juice. Some apps abuse them, too, so you can try turning it off for some apps.
Turning it off for pictures is a good move, for example.
^Although that solution is one of my main complaints about androids. I want to leave everything on AND have good battery life - which is why I stuck with the iPhone 4.

Whtas all the stuff about unlocked phones or whatever. Sorry I'm a noob on these things. I only pretend to be a real geek.

BTW buying a 4S right now would be completely silly. New iPhones will be out by October. I wouldn't do it unless you buy a used one on CL.

Problem is I can't wait that long and even if I did the upgrade would be way more on the new model than the $199 I can get this one for now.

Thanks for posting this thread Bob. I'm kinda in the same boat, and have been thinking about getting a new phone to replace my archaic clamshell motorola (lol). I just haven't been able to justify the costs involved with getting a new smart phone because I just don't use it that much (although that will probably change after I get one since it can do so much more). If there was a pay-as-you-go plan available on a good phone, I would do it, but so far I've only seen a few phones offer it and they pretty much suck.

Some food for thought as well. Verizon is about to change their whole data scheme:
http://www.engadget.com/2012/0.....e-june-28/
It's not obvious, but it's a totally bogus deal.
It's worth noting that via AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint you commit to $3,000+ for two years of iPhone service.
There are better options, like Virgin Mobile. I know, right? That's exactly what I thought at first. Think about this: You pay $1,700 for the same two years including the two iPhones, and you ARE NOT locked into a contract.
http://www.virginmobileusa.com/iphone
$30 a month!
At first I thought "Nah, man, coverage is no good!" Then... then I realized something: I don't go anywhere interesting other than camping or the occasional big vacation, and I don't want service when I'm camping or on vacation... no work, thanks!
Anyways, thats my game plan.

Thats interesting. I wonder how the speeds compare and if they will expand the coverage area. You also get $5 off with AutoPay bringing it to $25 a month. I would be curious to see how good it really is.
