360 RRoD fixes Reply with quote
So I purchased a Xbox 360 back in 2008, it has run flawlessly until now. It pulled a RRoD and it's done. I have looked up a few of the fixes, like removing the heat sink and replacing with new bolts. (A friend of mine tried this and it didn't work) but I don't want to do something like the towel trick, I'm looking for a more permanent fix.

Has anyone tried a fix they know for sure has worked? I'm not too worried about it though, seeing as BF3 and Skyrim I'll get for PC anyways Very Happy

I fixed mine by water-cooling it

You could try baking it in the oven, my friend fixed his laptop by removing all melt-able parts and baking it at 400 degrees for 10 minutes.

It fixed his graphics problem (He has an Asus G1S) .

It could be enough to re-flow solder the graphics (or other general hardware failure).

I've used the "replacement bolt" method and it worked like a charm. The key is to use Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste and to make sure everything is free of the old stuff. If it doesn't work, tighten the screws a tad bit and try again.

If all else fails, just go buy a Slim 360 rather than pay someone $50 - $100 to fix it.

Should have use the heat gun instead baking it, less work.

Thanks for the reply's!

I would really like to avoid buying another 360, (I'd rather spend it toward a better video card Very Happy ) I think I'll give the replacement bolt method a try, I can't recall if my friend used Arctic Silver, that could be the difference.

Thanks again!

+1 for the heat gun. Heat gun and something to protect the meltable parts has worked for me in the past.

+2 on the heat gun. It's the best thing behind re-balling the chips on the boards. You can use metal tape to shield the rest of the board, cook the chips, use new paste and fix up the brackets like the others in the thread have discussed. Should keep your console running for a few more months!

Replace the old thermal compound with artic silver 5 and change the bolts don't tighten them all the way yet...put it back in the cage then turn the system on with no fan until redring turns into two lights flashing then turn off and unplug .....tighten and put it back together and there you go redring fixed

Its 3 years from date of purchase, sometimes there are longer warranties from supply chain activations (prizes/giveaway xboxs).

The next xbox is coming out in about a year, xmas 2013 I thought when I last worked for them.
