Portable Hard Drive mod. Reply with quote
Decided that my portable hard drive was the exact same as everyone elses.....so I modded it. and what better to do than to put it inside of a NES video game.

so here is the hard drive... a 2.5" Seagate 500gb HDD

Just run a razorblade around the edge to break the seal of the glue holding the enclosure together

now for the difficult part.... choosing what game I am going to gut My NES still works, and I still play it, so that eliminated Mario/Duckhunt. I just can't bring myself to cut on my gold cased Legend of Zelda. After looking through all my games, this is the one I chose.

While some might not like the choice, this is actually a rare game that I played a ton growing up. It was actually pretty fun. Plus it was assembled with standard Phillips head screws as opposed to the star shaped ones.

Remove the screws

Wow... didn't realize that the game(chip) was that small..... only 3 chips 8 resistors and 4 capacitors.

These pegs are in the way and will have to go.

I don't really want to spend a lot of time on this, and everything is internal, so I am just going to cut with the dremel and sand......doesn't have to be perfect

The hard drive fits fine. Now just need to make room for the IO port.

Just a small cut, and it is fine. connected the USB cable to see how much clearance I need on the top....only 2mm

Drilled 1 small hole and splice a couple wires and Now I have an HDD activity light

Final product

Total time taken to mod this.......just 1 hour.

Hope you enjoyed.

Are you going to leave it in the drawer of a seedy motel after you are done?
