Multi-layer Etching into plexi? Reply with quote
So i am working on a case mod idea and i am wondering is it possible to Etch into plexiglass at different layers to allow for 2 separate colors to show through the plexiglass? i am wanting to work with a gold or white light with red with a top to bottom gradient, or does the nature of the plexiglass refuse to play nice with other colors in the same plexiglass? or maybe some trick with 2 pieces of plexiglass fitted together?

Danger Den can use their CNC router with a V tip to get the desired result

I haven't tried it, but i'd think you'd need 2 pieces of plexi? Otherwise the colors would mix I'd think, although I haven't tried it personally....

The V-Bit etch might help with the separation, but you're still going to get the light bouncing around inside and mixing (although it would be stronger in the direction it's being emitted).

I've seen some examples where people have done 2 color jobs, and I want to say that they used 2 different pieces of plastic or acrylic or plexi or whatever, and separated the light at the bottom with foil to keep it from mixing as much as possible.

I've also done some v-bit carves on my dad's cnc, it's pretty easy once you figure it all out. Very Happy

I was experimenting for a while with multiple pieces of plexi that were dremel etched with a piece of one way glass tint in between so when the front light is on for the front piece of plexi, you see only it and reflection and when the back piece is on the front went off so you only see one at a time. Got it to work on a small level (scraps from a friend at the time) but never had the money for a large piece of tint to do what I really wanted. Good luck on yours.

Mech and I just tore apart the Sapphire Icebox that was in their booth at 18. It had this. The S PPHIRE was blue and the A was in red. It was two pieces of plexi with foil.

Bit-tech had a worklog on a guy nicknamed Smilodon who did what you're looking to do with a door. 2 sheets, 2 sets of leds, and foil to prevent the colors mixing. I'd link, but the pictures *may* not come up. Will check tonight at home. Beautiful full-length windowed door with dragon and sword etched on the two - red dragon, blue sword.
