| Laser Cutting recommendations? |
|
I'm shopping...
Trying to find a place that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to have a simple hole cut out. I have already contacted Laser Cutting Services in Tualatin and going to contact Applied Laser Tech (altinc) which is literally a 5 minute walk from my house and hopefully they can also cut Acrylic.
So far the quote from Laser Cutting Services was $150 for just the side panel.

I have a few guns, I could give it the "bullet" look.

Dangerden! Contact Debbie from Dangerden about laser cutting, she will help you with that. Price pretty good deal!

You could also try looking for waterjet cutting services. The cut on a waterjet will usually come out cleaner and require less filing afterwards anyway due to lack of the extreme heat generated on the laser.
I've gotten quotes from these guys in west portland before http://www.ircalum.com/

Parts that have been cut by waterjet require almost as much sanding/cleanup as parts cut on a laser. The resulting edge is VERY rough, as if they were sanded with 20grit lol. Here's a shot of the fins from my Sensei case I had cut:
I was also under the impression that waterjetting produced a cleaner cut until I got these parts back. Just an FYI.

I'm starting to think that I should just cut it because I have a bolt on window that has a cover which would cover the edge. I just don't want to go cutting away and warp the side panel.

Depending on what you cut it with that shouldn't really be an issue as long as you don't go crazy and use too much pressure. A dremel this isn't really a possibility anyway because you would grind the cutting discs down really fast, and a jigsaw has a pretty equalized pressure all through the cut, now if you were to use a hand operated nibbling tool then yeah it could happen...I make small cuts in aluminum all the time with a nibbling tool and I have only had what I just described happen once and that was when I was in a silly rush for no reason.

It took forever and came out looking like crap.

The jig saw with a fine metal blade should do you just fine as long as the pattern isn't too detailed. Support the panel on a workbench or in the center of a Workmate. Just be careful not to damage the bench when you make a turn. There will *always* be finishing work to do.
Also, if you get the fiberglass reinforced cutting wheels for a Dremel, they don't wear out nearly as quickly as the standard ones.
