I know what you're thinking... it's a mod about a dragon. Uhhh..No.
It's the paint color that I'll be using on this mod. It's a very unique paint that flops around and can look anything from bright red to really dark metallic burgundy, and everywhere in between.
This mod belongs to a great member of the PDXLAN community....drum roll......... Govtman!
He has put his faith in me to build a kick ass masterpiece for him. And I won't let him down.
This all started with a post by him in the Marketplace section. He had this little ol' Intel i7 980 Extreme 6 core processor that he was offering a great deal on. People were asleep at the wheel so I offered my services in trade and he kindly accepted. This is what you call a win-win.
And this is another reason that this is a great community of people.
So, here we go -
The computer is already up and running but I will be tearing it down completely and starting from the beginning.
It's the Sugo from Silverstone
And the new paint job will be drawn from this car that was the SEMA show winner for Mothers Shine.
The paint is BASF Dragon Blood . Coolest paint name EVAR!
The case is sitting here waiting for me to tear into it.
I'm getting everything lined up, and, I also have a surprise on order for Mr. Govtman that he will not see until I bring this back to him at PDXLAN for his unveil.
Oh how I love secrets.
P.S. Govtman - the surprise is NOT the car in the pics . Sorry.

This is a great little case....emphasis on "little".
It's packed in there tight that's for sure.
I took everything out to get a little fresh air for a while . . . .
After a little prep this is going to get hit with some mean black.
I think I will give it some texture to give it a tough look. Since we are talking about dragons you know.
The guts are in a box and headed out to Modlandia (my shop) for some prep and paint.
I think some cool new windows are in order too.

Haha.
Awesome color in my opinion.

I have the insides primed and will be painting soon.
The inside will get a really cool paint that I haven't tried before. It's a black with fine texture and some red metallic added in. It will really go great with the color on the outside and tie everything together. I painted a test piece and I really think it will look awesome.
I have the parts all primed right now and they are curing. I'm doing all the inside stuff first and then I will paint the outside separately.
I'm having to void a few warranties. I am spraying the Bluray and the psu to match so I needed to dismantle a few things..
That's a really good etching primer that I used for the bare metal after I scuffed it all.
Paint coming next....

Interior painting - 90% complete
I am using the black with red metallic and it is a really cool look. It really sparkles in the light. It's hard to get a picture that shows how nice it is though.
I painted the Bluray player and the HDD. I will be leaving the SSD alone since it's red and black already.
I still need to disassemble the psu and paint it and I'll be done with the interior paint. The wires from the psu will be getting shortened so this will be a great time to tear into it.
Warranties voided so far on this build = 2

And that's without the original hard drive cage which would have filled the space underneath the optical drive bay. Had to lose it because the bay would have blocked all but two SATA ports.

Back from Vegas... soo tired but work must go on.
I pulled apart the cpu cooler so I can paint the shield around it. I took the plastic cover off the gpu and removed it's fan. And the psu was torn apart to get ready for paint as well. These will be painted the gray color that's on the hood of the Mustang. The wire sleeves are red and gray so this will tie everything in really nice.
Prime time --
HHhhhmmmmm ....what's this......
Looks like blood in a can.
Not just any blood...DRAGON BLOOD
I got some on my hand and it actually is the same color as dried blood. Kinda creepy.
After a couple light wet coats - -
It's not shiny because this is a base coat and will need the clear coat to bring out the color and shine.
After 2 coats of clear you can see it really shines like crazy. The color changes with lighting. You can see it looks like it darkened up. But if you hit it with different light it changes a little.
So if it shines like that with just 2 coats of clear I wonder what 12 coats of clear would look like........
This maybe.....
.
.
.
.
.
Oh just wait till it's cut and buffed....
I will be spraying the gray parts next and let the red stuff cure for a couple days.
Then I have wire sleeving, a couple new windows, and a few special touches.

The parts are curing nicely. That is some seriously deep gloss. I've never put that much gloss on anything before. It looks like you could dive in and go swimming. I can't wait to rub it out...the paint I mean.
I sprayed the gray on. I started with a lighter gray but then I switched to one that matches the sleeving that Govtman had for it. It is a perfect match. And it goes real nice with the red.
The ribs that I took out of the gpu cover needed sanded down (that was fun) so I can paint them to match the red. This removed some fingerprints trying to hand sand these tiny pieces. I didn't really need to sand them for the paint to stick, it was more becasue once they had paint on them they may not fit back into the cover because of the paint thickness. They were tight coming out so a paint layer or two could create problems.
These will get painted tomorrow (maybe) and then I'll let everything cure for a couple more days before it all gets the rub down.
I noticed some wavy areas in the clear where it was so thick it wanted to droop a little. I should be able to knock it down real easy. One thing about that much clear is that you can get away with a lot of sanding to get it absolutely mirror smooth.
Can't wait to see the reflection of Govtman's face when he gets this back...

I'm always willing to teach people everything I know.
The truth is, I've been struggling with my paint jobs lately because I keep my boat in the paint booth during winter so I'm just using my small storage bay. Not exactly optimum conditions but it works. My shop is 1500 sf but I'm only using 100 sf of it.
Thanks for the compliments.
I have some really cool stuff coming up that I may not show until the lan. I love surprises.
