It would be a privilege to get to learn some painting from you sir.

oh... by the way the mod is looking good Smile

I'm always willing to teach people everything I know. Cool

The truth is, I've been struggling with my paint jobs lately because I keep my boat in the paint booth during winter so I'm just using my small storage bay. Not exactly optimum conditions but it works. My shop is 1500 sf but I'm only using 100 sf of it. Confused

Thanks for the compliments.

I have some really cool stuff coming up that I may not show until the lan. I love surprises. Razz

Hey ... only I can do surprise builds at the LAN's ..... LMAO

Nice work BTW... been following it all the way through..... Smile

Thx Elmy.

The paint has cured long enough.

I decided to also paint the case fans even though you really don't see them. But they might as well match.

So I sprayed them with the gray color.

Then, the scary part -

That is what it looks like..... sandpaper. Shocked

For a perfect reflection you must sand the finish and buff it out. (very carefully)

All sanded down -

I also sanded all the other pieces. They look nice and flat.

The next step is buffing with 2 different compounds and 3 different pads. I started on it but decided to quit when I buffed through the paint on an edge. Just not my night so I quit before I make it worse. Easy fix but bummed me out. No pic of that sorry.

Will finish buffing tomorrow and then touch up the tiny little spot I burned through. One thing I noticed too is that this is so clear that you can actually see the 1500 grit sanding scratches. So I'll be bumping it up to 2000 grit. I usually only have to do that for black.

Be back tomorrow - Cool

That's what you get for putting 436 layers of clear coat.

I did the same thing to my lanbox that I was modding. I sanded through the paint and clear like 3 times. I eventually just gave up on the mod and now it sits in my garage.

This one. I'll finish it eventually. Maybe... This is inspiring me to at least.

I'll help you out with the secret-

Only sand up to the edges. The paint will always be smooth already on corners so they don't need sanded.

When you go to buff it out you need to put a piece of tape about 1/16" in from the edge or corner to protect it. Again, you don't even really need to buff the corners/edges.
This protects it from being rubbed through.
I screwed up because I thought I was hot sh!t and I could get away with not doing it. It only takes a second and then it's too late.
If you need me to show you what I mean just hit me up at the lan.

BTW - I really like the color on your case. I'd love to see it done. Cool

Yeah I've heard of that secret, but I learned it a little to late =P I'm hoping to finish it one day. I just ordered a DD Qlan which I PROMISED my wife would be the last piece of hardware I would buy till a ways down the road from our baby being born. So it may take me a few years but I guess I could still finish it.

I guess I don't really need hardware to finish the case =)

But you're still getting the screen don't worry =)

And Woody - please finish the case - it does look *really* nice.

Picked up some 2000 grit today. It did the trick.

So like I was saying - You need to put tape along the edges and corners to protect them when you sand or buff.

Now after 2000 grit, rubbing compound, polishing compound, and a dry wipe you get this --

I hope that is shiny enough?? Wink

And of course the rest of the parts got the same treatment -

That last pic shows something new.... a hole in the bottom?? I don't think these cases have enough air flow so I added a 120 mm fan hole under the mobo area sort of below the proc so that air can be drawn up from underneath and exit out the top 2 fans. I will have new windows that won't have ventilation holes so I think this should definitely help.

There isn't enough room to squeeze a fan under it but I really just needed it to put a filter in. I picked up this great filter with removable cover that just snaps into place for easy access.

I got a little more done but I won't show it for a while becasue it is part of a surprise....

BTW - Driving home today I was going over everything in my mind and I realized that I didn't really ask if I could do all this.. Shocked

I was kinda just supposed to be doing a paint job and a little sleeving. But I can't help myself. I want it to be awesome. So...... I hope this is cool with you Govtman??

At a point very soon I will have to ask Govtman to stop watching this log. I have some cool things going on but I want them to be a surprise at the lan when I bring it in and he gets to see it. And I would like to show you guys what's going on behind the scenes. Or, should I make you all wait?? Razz

If you were to add taller feet you could probably use a 15mm thick fan for the bottom of the case.

Thanks everyone. This thing was a little tricky because of all the rounded edges.

I thought of that too. Looks like great minds think alike. I may turn some feet out on a lathe that are custom. A fan would be great under there and would really help cooling.

Even lesser minds have an idea once in a while. I have a set of MNPCTECH billet aluminum case feet (silver) that were for a failed mod. I think I may even have a sythe-Kaze 120x15mm fan in my parts box. Should I ship them up? Not that I don't want you to have fun on the lathe, but dayum, I really think you're starting to get screwed on this project for materials and time and I'm feeling more and more guilty. Sad

I LOVE the paint job.
Makes me want one for my Datsun. She is desperate for a new paint job. (and engine... and upholstery and...)

Can't wait to see the finished product at the LAN!

Which feet are they? how tall and what diameter? It would really help out the air flow a lot if we get the right combination. And the fan would be great if you have it. I'll pm you my addy. I would post it here but people might come break in to steal your case. Razz

Ssoooooo G-man are you willing to ignore the thread at some point so I can surprise you? Or are you like the kid who peeks at his presents before Xmas? I will post when it is time to stop looking.

?????

You will get to see a little more but not much.

First - The case feed are the turned Billet aluminum you find here.

3/4" thick hard rubber
Requires 1/4" mounting hole.
Diameter = 1-3/4" x Height = 7/8"

The Sythe Kaze-jyuni slim fan is rated at 38 cfm, at about 29DB. Don't know if we can do better than that with a 12mm depth.

Second - Yes, I'll quit looking in the project logs. I may chew my fingernails to the knuckle, but I'll quit looking when you tell me. Sigh. Very Happy
