Is anyone else getting sick of launch day DLC?
If not that then within the first couple months...
It used to be a good idea for games that were getting old. Breathed in some new life.
Just seems like a big money grab now.

Day 1 DLC is tricky, I will use Mass Effect as an example because its most likely the one you are thinking about.
Mass Effect 2 for example, it was a reward for buying the game new, Zaaed wasn't that interesting, the only thing that would have sucked about not getting it would have been not getting the 15 gamerscore (I play the Mass Effect games on my 360).
Mass Effect 3 for example, it could be viewed as a cash grab, the developers felt that having multiplayer was incentive to buy the game new vs used. I think this was a terrible move on their part. Mass Effect 1 and 2 were single player games based on story driven content that had sold millions of dollars, and thats why people buy their games.
I have played about 2 hours of ME3, and don't know if I am going to get the DLC, I probably won't, or if ever will be a long time in the future.
Having Prothean DLC, though they claim it is not important to the story (which after 3 games I think finding more about the Protheans is pretty damn important to MY story).
If they decided to give away the DLC for free with purchase of a new copy, and sell the multiplayer access, I think the reaction would be worse, so it is a "double standard."
Gears of War 3, had the first map pack on the disc, yeah it sucks that I bought the $30 dollar season pass for something that was already on my disc, but I enjoy playing the game, it makes me feel better about that fact, but Gears 3 is much different than my Mass Effect example.
In Gears, you don't expect great story arches and large character development (its there in gears but much less than in the Mass Effect Universe). I could live without playing on those 3 maps for Gears 3.
The From Ashes DLC for Mass Effect 3, was said to be developed after the main game was completed, but if so how was it on the disc (because it would have to be approved just the same as the rest of the content).
I read an interview with Chris Avellone about the Fallout: New Vegas DLC, and there were no initial plans for DLC until the game showed a little success, then each DLC was completed within an 8 week time period per DLC.
Completed long after the game was certified and printed, and say what you will about Obsidian and Bethesda, yeah there games can be glitchy, but due to there massive size I think its a fair trade (to an extent).
Back on topic:
I think that if the DLC is created after release, or after printing, and it is not stripped content from the game (Capcom, Street Fighter, I am looking at you), then I am OK with it as long as it is good content.
It all depends what the game is.
TL:DR: Its complicated.

In regards to the From Ashes thing. I've heard that it wasn't the entire DLC that was on the disc, just the character model/animations. The recruitment mission and dialog is supposed to be what was missing. I don't have proof one way or the other on this though as it's just something I heard.

I have mixed feelings.
On one hand, if the content was taken from the original development, then I feel robbed.
On the other hand, I like it when companies have DLC in mind from day one because that means they will support their product.
Honestly, I get more upset about "exclusive" content that never really is. 2 examples.
Left 4 Dead 2 preorders got the Baseball bat which was touted as the "golden weapon", but instead, it is a reskinned version of the cricket bat. On top of that, if you play in a server with someone who preordered, then everyone gets the baseball bat. So my preorder was for nothing.
Deus Ex 3 offered "exclusive" deals to preorders for different places. The preorder deal for gamestop was different from the amazon one. The steam one didn't get any exclusive content at all. I know people who bought the game at both places to get all the content. 5 weeks later the "exclusive" content was sold on steam as a DLC.
The only company that truly offer "Exclusive" content is Tripwire, who refuses to make exclusive content public or offer it as a DLC

I have no problems with a game that gets released with DLC already planned for down the road. I'm ok with paying for a quality game, and paying for some additional content for that game down the road, once I've played through the original game.
A game that comes out with available (and almost mandatory to really play the game) DLC, for monre money on launch day? That's a good way to stop me from buying the game to begin with.
