It was a little scary "experimenting" with $700 worth of paint materials.
My paint supplier told me it couldn't be done but I just took it as a challenge to prove them wrong. They are anxiously awaiting proof that it worked.
Rod....more update??

Okay guys here is an update -
Rod and I are building a system for Rosewill/Newegg that is going to be featured at their booth at PAX East and then Computex in Tapei.
They wanted something really awesome so we gave them a suggested list of goodies to provide. One thing they were sure of is that they wanted to use the new Blackhawk Ultra case. This thing is huge!
The hardware list has changed back and forth a little because we were hoping to get not-yet-released items to fill it up. I'll let Rod update the Hardware portion of the log.
I know you want to see the paint so I will take care of that for now.
We were given about a month to do this build which really freaked me out since I was going on vacation for 2 weeks. But we came up with some design options and finally agreed on one.
Here is a shot of the case in it's original form -
So our first plan was to change it to bright pearl white with candy apple red and a dash of chrome. Rosewill didn't think it would be flashy enough. So more ideas were thrown back and forth and then we decided on this -
Pretty cool looking. But, how to paint that same effect?????? hhmmm
So Rod and I stripped the case completely of it's powder coating. Took the case completely apart...
All that just so it could go from rough black to shiny black..
The colors we went with were black and Viper Red. I used PPG Concept 2000 acrylic urethane bc/cc over epoxy primer.
So it made it back to black...
I needed a guide to start running lines for the pattern so I printed up a sheet that would give me something to look at.
Fun with tape..... I used line tape that is used for doing custom layouts. It can bend around and has a very clean edge.
Then taped off the areas I wanted to leave black...
Looks kinda cool already eh?
After large amounts of Viper Red ....
And then tape removal creates the first phase of the paint effect..
Now for the really scary part....
After talking with some other well known custom painters and my guys at the paint shop I was told that what I'm about to do could not be done.....
I accept that challenge and set out to prove them wrong...
**** insert sponge****
Using a sponge I sprayed it with paint and then transfered it to the surface alternating between the black and red paint. Here is the beginning..
And then what you saw as the teaser pic Rod posted...
I sponged it on until it looked really uniform and then blended the black over the top all around the sides with my spray gun to fade it outward...
It looks a little dark in the pics but the effect carries from the sides and into the top and front bezels. It just fades out darker and darker but it's there.
Here it is once I hit it with the clear coat. This is cleared but not wet sanded or buffed yet...
So I think I came real close don't you??
We cut a about 1/4" all the way around the original side panel that was vented so we can have a nice window and will be installing that after the buffing is done.
We will have more updates through the weekend since we have to ship this off to them on Monday morning... Talk about crunch time!!

Lots of red and black paracord going in we melted and form the paracord over the crimp of the pin so we can avoid using any heat shrink on the connector end.

Bob - what was the reason the paint guys had for the effect not to work? What you've described is a basic home painting technique done just the way you did it, except with House paint rather than automotive. Bet you got the idea from HGTV!
I LOVE the look! Now we have a real Clarke's Law case painter!

Lol thx bud.
Sponge painting with household latex paint is no problem since it's water based and it doesn't have to be perfectly flat. It usually goes on a textured wall so you can really get away with mistakes and nobody will notice.
Using an automotive paint like acrylic urethane on a perfectly flat steel panel that you want to clear coat afterwards presents all kinds of issues.
- The paint will melt most sponges
- Dabbing the paint onto the surface and pulling it back off can lead to solvent bubbles
- You can get particles left behind from the sponge breaking down = this one happened a little..
- And worst of all, once you touch the sponge to the surface it is what it is cuz you can't just wipe it off or patch over it.
I want to get some final pics and walk into the paint shop looking like a stud.. lol .. not really, but I will be happy to show them it worked.

Sweet paint job Bob! How many coats of clear did it take to get the surface flat again? Did you knock the texture down a bit before clearing?

I used 3 coats of clear. I usually like about 4. I thought I could let it cure and then sand it out to see if it needed more but it came out pretty flat. I did knock it down a little before the clear but not much. I didn't want to lose the effect.
@ DB - lol thx. Better than being called Mr. Crabs.
