Internet/Steam Content Downloader Thread Reply with quote

Fellow LAN attendees - I have some cool stuff that I wanted to share with you regarding speeds, interwebs, Steam Content (Pay Attention to this one) and other random stuff.

Internet - - Still there, still bringing super 1GiGAbit fiber-optical goodness and look forward to some smooth play again this awesome event! - http://www.pdxlan.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=11598

Steam Content Downloader - This...this is something that I hope you guys take a look at, and in the long run, will save you some time as the external Steam Content servers can be unpredictable at times.

So last lan I posted this -

Quote:
PDXLAN Steam Content Downloader
I built one, hand coded, crafted, created and imagined, just for PDXLAN

Still in super beta but IT IS WORKING for downloading all your steam games @ the LAN. I'll be putting this awesome crafted file on the File server so that no longer will you have to download the GCF's and then restore the backups - which I'll admit took some time for both you, and me.

This newer method is simply menu driven, you select the game you want, it goes out to my file server, grabs the RAW files and copies them directly to your Steam Folder. On a Steam re-launch, they should be there!

If any Steam updates come out, or a new game needs/wants to be added, with a simple coding change I can make that happen.

Now it's time for bed, I'll post more later if people are interested.

It got some great hits during the LAN and I was able to push out 2.4 TERABYTES of Steam content that weekend, all of it was saved from going out to the internet! This was pretty fun to make at the time, and since then, have made some improvements for optimization and an auto-updater so that if I update the game list - you'll get the update as well on next program run.

Where this comes into play is pretty key on you guys having a smooth gaming experience and perhaps the way that everyone can and will obtain the FREE Dirt Showdown game at the event.

So - to save our intertubes, potential Steam LAG (<--Read not my fault for "Steam LAG"), you can "pre-load" Dirt Showdown or any game for that matter that I have listed below - to your computer before you get your game key. After download, activate your Steam Key and kablamo there's your game. This means, all content will be kept on the Local network and transferred directly from my Steam Content Downloader (PDX.STEAM.exe) to your machine and off the actual Internet/WAN/Firewall side - reducing stress off of Spork. You may have noticed that last LAN was Modern Warfare 3 free weekend, over 60+ people were able to download the game locally from my program way faster than it would have been over the internet.

Where the fun math comes into for ONLY Dirt Showdown - -

Dirt Showdown (9.65GB) * PDXLAN (536ish) = 5TB for 1 game, for 500+ people. So lets try and avoid 5TB of Steam traffic from the internet when you can get it from me locally and at max port speeds to your table!

You will be able to find the PDX.STEAM (Steam Content Downloader) on the file server - http://files.pdx.lan/ at the LAN, as always, if you have any issues, want to see a game on the list (that you can provide via a file share) etc, come find me @ the DD table.

Besides the game list below, I also have "Other" non-steam games available that will usually transfer the install files and then run it locally on your machine. As Nitemayr requested and DAYO supported last time, I also have the option presented for to change the install directory if needed - otherwise it will read the default Steam location via a registry query.

There's a known "bug" that this will only run on 64Bit systems, addressing that this weekend for those who run x32!

For the Game List - -

Age of Empires Online (3GB)

He certainly does, but odn't encourage him to think he does. We want him building this kind of thing, not just pointing out the cool stuff he *already* did........Twisted Evil

Don't care if it was thousands of lines of code or just a few - it's magic and Notoes is the best! I needed this at Lanapalooza, and it worked perfectly!

Any chance you could share some of your secrets with us Smaller LANs?

Or is it realy just a controlled network copy, and relaunching steam to do an intergrity check?

Pretty much yes, most of the time if the proper files are set to the correct file path, no integrity checks are needed. At first it was too complicated for some to restore from backups, which also hurt the feature of Steams streaming updates. This way, I can have a dynamic server take the updates from Steam which then updates the content server instantly etc.

Translated = Notoes is awesome and this is a huge time/bandwidth saver for the LAN.

Thanks Kyle! Can we get an ASCII cat on the main page for the downloader?
