Motor Attachment

Attaching the 4 in 1 ESC. I actually had to re-wire this a few times to get the motor spin direction corrected. This can be changed int he BLheli software, but I did not know that quite yet. It's just switching two wires anyway.

On the side you can see the VTX and the LC filter. The LC filter is to help filter out banding in the video due to rapid voltage drops when you hit the throttle hard.

A capacitor and an inductor help reduce video interference, but not by much. This entire build is a "cheap" build, so I was not too concerned. Still, a low ESR cap makes a huge difference in filtering. The next drone will have a different setup.

Loose planning for how it will fit together. You can see the camera here too.

This is how it looked when I first put it together

Each prop weighs 6 grams, and the batteries are 155g for 1300mah 4s 70C. The AUW or all up weight of the copter came out pretty good at 472 for the first time.

I was not happy with how the build turned out, so I made a few changes after my maiden flight.

Flying a drone without any assistance software is tough folks. Crash with grace Cool

Here is how it looked before the maiden flight

Took it apart to shorten wires and move the VTX and the receiver, as well as the buzzer.

How it looked after I made changes. I pretty much got the receiver and the VTX protected by the frame, instead of sitting on the outside. A few crashes taught me the importance of this.

After a hard crash, I noticed once of the motors was not spinning very well, but the copter still flew. I looked closer and it looks like one of the wires jumped the stator winding. This happened because the stator came loose from the motor frame, which it should be securely glued to. These were cheap motors, so no big deal and it's fixable.

The new run cam arrives. It's amazingly small. The pictures do not do the quad justice on how tiny all these parts are. I picked this cam up for weight savings, picture quality, and space savings.

I should be back in the air friday night. I also need to wire in the new flight controller which has a lot more functions, but no pictures of that right now.

Trying to fit it all together. It's not so fun this part.

After flying this around a bit, I started having serious radio range control issues. 100-150 meters which is way too low. After a lot of testing, antenna swapping, and even messing with the TX, I found several key things.

This looks like a tiny surface mount cap where it does not belong. I could not find anyone else that had this here. removed it. No radio range improvement.

20170722_153034

Eventually I looked towards the receiver. It's just a dud. I switched to an XM+, range issue solved.

I had a hard crash and lost FPV, but the copter still flew. Whats up?

I found the FPV and VTX were not getting any power. Looked closer and I found this...The 12V rail is blown. 5V rail works but is too low for the vtx. I had to switch to the ESC's 12V BEC instead.

My friend had his whole all in one board go up in smoke a day later just by plugging the battery in.

Ready to fly

20170723_121649

Had hours of amazing flight over the weekend. Broke a motor in my first 30 seconds on monday! Whole thing is trash, but at least it's only 7$. I already had spares, already swapped, and I'm still flying.

HEre I was thinking you were going to make a racing drone look like a little tiny goose

Looks about the size of the ones racing at Maker Faire.
